Oh Barbie!

We took our granddaughter, C., shopping so she could choose her own birthday gift. She emphatically stated that she wanted a Barbie doll!
We didn't buy this doll because it's the 1959 original
and would cost thousands!

C's mother agreed with her choice of gifts, but wisely suggested, “Since we don’t dress like Barbie, see if you can find a Barbie doll that is dressed modestly -- not too outlandish!”

We didn't buy this one because
the poor thing is covered with tattoos!

Upon entering the toy section of Wal-Mart, it became obvious that Barbie had not read For The Strength of Youth. Her fashion outfits included spaghetti straps, strapless gowns, cleavage, bikinis, low tank tops, short short dresses, etc. It was difficult, if almost next to impossible, to make a modest choice, given Wal-Mart’s display of outfits.

We didn't buy this one because it was not for sale at Wal-Mart,
but WHAT in the WORLD??
We didn't buy this Barbie, because....well, just because.

Ultimately, my granddaughter chose a Barbie that was pretty conservatively dressed. Good for her. Good for her mom. Dressing modestly, and thinking about what modesty means, starts when you’re young. As the twig's bent, so dresses the girl – or something like that!

Barbie’s been around for 51 years, so I’m guessing everyone has an opinion, observation, and/or memory concerning this doll. Oh Barbie!
